God, the Devil, and a Monkey

God. The idea for God's design came to me as if it were a gift from God, as if he said, "Dusty, this is how I want to look." Maybe it didn't go quite like that, but what I want to get across is that the drawing you see now is pretty close to the the first sketch I did. All of the characters did end up going through a process of simplification. I gradually skimmed them down to what I thought were the bare necessities needed for them to become easily recognizable. I'm really happy with the way God turned out. I intended for him to have a very passive look. At first I felt that God was somewhat hindered by his lack of animation, but I think I've learned to use it to my advantage.

The Devil. He is my favorite character to work with, in part because it's so easy to make a joke using him. As with God he immediately came together the way I wanted him to, and hasn't changed much. His character did end up going through a number of minor simplifications. I love the way I can animate his character. Of the three, he's the most animated facially. Because he is the master of mischief there's also a lot of ideas that I can use him for. When coming up with ideas for cartoons, it's always easer using the antagonist.

A Monkey. While I say The Devil is my favorite character to work with, the monkey is my favorite character in general. The Monkey was also the most difficult in the preliminary designing stages, but he's by far the one I'm most happy with. From the original design the only remaining aspect is the tail of the monkey. I originally wanted to use the Golden Mean as the tail, and I was prepared to measure it out every single time. Until I realized the amount of work that involved... so now I just wing it. For a while I used the monkey as a small commentator in editorial cartoons, but I've let that go. I still use him as the image on my business cards, which I never carry around with me.

Dog. I was talking to a friend about the comic and he mentioned that I should have God turn evil one day and vie for the title of most evil with The Devil. I didn't really like the idea of placing God out of character, making him evil might be going a little overboard. That's when I got the idea for God's Evil Twin. That was certainly doable for me. And what better name for the antithesis of God than his name backwards. It actually turned out making a pretty good little joke. Unfortunately, Dog ended up just being another devil character, and since I already have a great "evil one" I haven't used Dog much.

Buddha. Since before the first comic came out, I always had it in mind to have Buddha as a character. I've always envisioned him as a major representative of Eastern religion. Buddha's character took the longest of all the characters for me to pin down. While the main cast took me about 6 months to develop, Buddha took nearly a year before I was content with his design. Though, much like the other characters, when it finally comes together, it really comes together.
